Andrew Buckley began his career in image-making at just 15 years old on the iconic Australian shoreline of North Narrabeen. Raised on surfing and skateboarding, he started photographing his friends in the water—work that quickly led to work experience with Tracks magazine and his first published image of professional surfer Glen Winton.
Over the years, Andrew—known to most as Shorty—established himself as one of the world’s leading surf photographers. His career reached a defining milestone when he held three major roles simultaneously: Staff Photographer for Surfer Magazine in the USA, Senior Photographer at Tracks Magazine in Australia, and Head of Photography for Rip Curl International.
As the industry evolved, so did Andrew’s practice. His work naturally shifted toward narrative-driven, motion-focused storytelling, leading to multiple awards for cinematography. Today, he works fluidly across high-end commercial, feature film, corporate, documentary, and social-first filmmaking—bringing cinematic craft and authenticity to campaigns designed for both long-form impact and immediate digital engagement.
Andrew has collaborated with production companies and brands around the world on campaigns for clients including Apple, Toyota, Patagonia, and the Australian Defence Force, delivering work that balances strategic intent with emotional resonance.
Continuing his journey as a director and cinematographer, Andrew is drawn to projects with a strong human and environmental core, as seen in his recent film KIN for Patagonia. Deeply connected to the natural world, he is known for creating considered, informative, and poetic narratives—stories that feel grounded, truthful, and visually arresting.
Real stories, told beautifully and honestly—through imagery, motion, and meaning.
